Let’s Talk About It: Section 8

Happy December! Let the Christmas countdown begin, only 21 days left! Are you excited or over it already? I’m a little bit of both. As the Christmas holiday approaches quickly, my city decided to gift the residents with the Section 8 list opening up for about four days before it closes again indefinitely. I wanted to discuss my thoughts on the program for my city. If you haven’t heard of this government program, it’s designed to help low income families find stable housing on the rental market. Families can choose from apartments or rental houses if the owners allow the voucher. The voucher covers a portion of rent, trying to make possible that everyone pays only 30% . So what’s the issue? Well, for starters the program has gained quite a scandalous reputation. Landlords have had property damage that’s not reimbursed by the program  and hefty loads of paperwork to deal with. The program requires safety inspections and some landlords have complained about this aspect as well. A program that covers rent and  requires safety inspections couldn’t possibly be bad, right? Wrong, the inspections isn’t the bad aspect, but rather the housing that qualifies aren’t safe or up to par in my city. The housing tends to be in the most crime filled areas, unsanitary living conditions with pests and rodents, and unprofessional property management in some cases. Nothing about this program ends up benefiting hard working families in actuality. Housing in more prominent areas won’t accept these vouchers despite families rental or income history. The program claims to give families an opportunity to leave these bad neighborhoods and school districts, but has come to strictly house in these poverty stricken areas. Not to mention, many tenants of this program have complained about the housing authority workers over this program. They’re definitely not in the business of being polite according to many public reviews. I’m not against this program by any means nor am I against anyone who utilizes the program. I am against the lack of housing options available in my city outside of housing projects and I am against the lackluster treatment of tenants in this program. People shouldn’t be treated poorly for utilizing government services and these workers should consider other lines of work if they can’t handle basic customer service principles. That’s my spill on Section 8.

Until Next Time,
